  • Position Summary

    Westmed Medical Group is currently hiring for a full-time Radiation Therapist at the Rye, New York office location.  Radiation therapists are involved in cancer with penetrating beams of high-energy radiation.  Radiation therapists are highly skilled members of the cancer management team. They are responsible for accurately recording, interpreting and administering the treatment prescribed by radiation oncologists in accordance with established departmental procedures and standards. During treatment, therapists help physicians use fluoroscopy, X-ray films or CT scans to localize and outline anatomical areas requiring treatment. The position also provides clinical support to the Radiation Oncology Department. The position ensures the highest quality patient care by providing emotional support to patients and by complying with established procedures and standards. This position supports organizational goals by providing quality customer service, participating in performance improvement efforts and demonstrating a commitment to team work and cooperation.

    Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities

    • Administer radiation therapy as prescribed by the physician.
    • Display professional conduct essential to the well being of the radiation oncology patient.
    • Demonstrate effective written communication skills; Maintain accurate and detailed treatment chart documentation.
    • Demonstrate effective verbal communication skills in the clinical setting.
    • Has the ability to educate the patients and their families on radiation therapy and the processes in the department.
    • Observe the clinical progress of the radiation oncology patient, use clinical decision making skills to recognize and report any signs of complications.
    • Utilize treatment accessories to accurately reproduce the radiation treatment.
    • Adhere to radiation safety procedure protocol.
    • Safely and effectively operate a variety of computerized simulation and treatment machines.
    • Perform machine safety checks; knows the safe limits of equipment’s operations, and report abnormalities or inconsistencies to the proper authority.
    • Construct immobilization devices and employ custom blocking techniques that are conducive to conformal radiation therapy.
    • Utilize sophisticated imaging equipment for precise tumor localization.
    • Work closely with the Radiation Oncologist and the physics team in the preparation of a treatment plan that is customized to the patient’s needs.
    • Knowledge of the human anatomy and proper positioning of the patient to provide treatment as prescribed.
    • Always places patient care first.
    • Reports any equipment problems to Administrator/Chief Therapist and physics staff promptly, and assists, if required, to investigate problem.
    • Provides feedback on any process where an opportunity of improvement exists.
    • Provides information to Administrator about equipment, process, and personnel issues.
    • Maintains positive relationships with other team members, nursing, dosimetry, physics, physicians, administration, engineer., etc.
    • Assists Administrator by rotating through coverage and billing compliance documentation procedures.
    • Adhere to the Radiation Therapist Code of Ethics.

    Required Qualifications

    • Satisfactory completion of a course in Radiation Therapy Technology
    • Current licensure as required by the State of New York and certification or board eligible in Radiation Therapy by the American Registry of Radiology Technology 
    • Current ARRT certification with registry in radiation therapy
    • BLS certification
    • 1-3 years clinical experience in radiation therapy preferred
    • Knowledge in principles, practices and procedures involved in the operation of ionizing radiographic and radiation therapy equipment
    • Technical problem solving
    • Ability to work flexible hours if needed
    • May work evening and occasionally late night or early morning hours
    • Ability to travel for educational / training purposes
    • Excellent computer skills, including use of, Record and Verify, Excel, Word, and Outlook. 
    • Knowledge of cancer physiology, treatment and side effects
